Leather 20" Waterbag

This 20” Waterbag has been my personal GO TO carry on to travel all over the world and it is undoubtedly the most popular leather travel bag we’ve offered since about 2010. And, if you own it, it’ll become even more popular to you the more you use it because you get compliments on it and it ages so handsomely. I tell the story of why I called it the Waterbag at the end of this page.

Super Strong Materials

Toughest Leather - Our leather is the strongest leather we can buy. It’s called Full Grain leather, and the version we use of it is even thicker than boot leather. They use our mineral tanned leather for 95% of the work boots, carseats and leather jackets of the world.

Hardest Hardware - Our custom 316 Stainless Steel puts the HARD in hardware. Using it for bag hardware is like killing a fly with a shotgun (please please google 316 Stainless Steel). Somewhere in the world, a lone tear just dropped from the eye of a metallurgist. Our clips were tested and found they can hold up to a 750 lb bag of cats over a 552 ft. cliff without breaking. Not 751 lbs. though. It's the kind of hardware people use when their life depends on it. Open ocean and parachuting stuff. It’s also the metal of upper end watches because it stays so shiny and is so hard to scratch There's no other overnight leather duffle bag or any company, for that matter, that we know of who uses such hardware of consequence.

Superman Thread - Superman would have used this thread to make his suit because it’s super. Our German thread is unbelievably strong industrial strength marine grade thread, and we use the thick version of it. It is commonly used to sew things together like parachutes, industrial cargo nets and other things that the integrity of, is important. It is the most expensive thread on the market for a reason. Because it’s UV resistant polyester thread, it doesn't deteriorate into dust with exposure to UV light and heat, like half priced nylon thread does. Watch out for low quality companies that use nylon thread just to save a few bucks. If your life needs to depened on your leather bag staying together, let your life depend on this thread.

Over-Engineered Design

No Breakable Parts - No zippers, snaps, buttons, snaps or anything else that can eventually break in the first 100 years.

One Solid Piece of Leather - This duffle bag was designed out of only one solid piece of full grain leather so there are as few seams as possible. The more pieces of leather a bag is made with, the weaker it becomes since the seam is the weakest place. I design all of my Saddleback Leather bags with the fewest pieces of leather possible. This one wears the crown.

Only 5 Stitches Per Inch - We only stitch at 5 stitches per inch so there’s more leather between each of the perforating needle holes and therefore fewer holes to start a tear. It has fewer stitch holes than any leather duffle bag we know of its size. And, the fewer needle holes the less chance of water potentially getting in when it’s folded over.

Extra Reinforced - All stress points are reinforced with rivets, tons of extra stitching or with hidden polyester strapping because polyester straps don’t stretch but leather eventually does with years of heavy stress.

Hard Removable Liner - We include a removable hard pigskin lined liner to give the bag shape. I prefer my own Waterbag without it if I’m just carrying clothes, but now and then I like it when I’m carrying stuff to distribute the direct force of any pointy rocks, shards of glass or any object that may poke the leather bottom of the bag for a prolonged time.

James Bondish Versatile Design

Water and Sand Resistant - When this leather duffle bag is rolled down or folded over, it’s hard for water, blowing dust or sand to get into it if you’re on the Deschutes or out in the Sahara.

Converts Into Backpack - The same shoulder strap can run through an O-ring to convert the whole bag into a backpack. I carried the waterbag as a backpack rolled up empty one time through London with the family. When we got to Hamley’s, the biggest toy store in the world, we stupidly told the kids that they could pick out toys for their upcoming birthdays, but not to expect gifts on the actual day. We filled that leather backpack / leather duffle bag up. But two and four months later, when it came time for their 9th and 11th birthdays, all of those toys they bought were now either broken, used up or boring to them. So, we had to buy new gifts because it would have been lame to just have a birthday cake.

Compression Closure Straps - The three strap configuration is very very cool. You can cinch them down and the air in your clothes and stuff is pressed right out of the bag so you’ll have more room for more stuff in the bag. It can get so densely packed, it gets pretty heavy. But the same three straps can be tucked inside the bag through secret slots for when you’re carrying it in open tote mode.

Easy and Odd Packing - This leather duffle bag opens wide, and when you roll the top edge back over itself, it forms a stiffer ring that keeps the mouth wide open for easy packing. And because it doesn’t have a zipper, you can stick baseball bats or other oversized objects out of it and still close it securely. One time in Zambia, I put a whole donkey leg into my Waterbag and strapped it closed with the leg sticking out. I then waited at a distance for a lion to tear into it. It was awesome for sure. He still couldn’t open it completely though. That actual Waterbag is in our leather showroom in Texas. It’s a great alternative to the typical leather carry on luggage.

Two Handle Options - This leather travel bag was designed with two handles to balance when carrying. If you roll it more then use the built in handle. If you roll it down tight, then use the second handle sticking up. You’re going to thank me for this.

Two Shoulder Strap Anchor Options - I designed the Waterbag with two d-rings to attach the shoulder strap to that are up high on the bag so you can carry it when it’s wide open in tote mode and I also put two d-rings down low on each end for the shoulder strap to attach to when the bag is kind of empty and rolled up tightly. It’s hard to explain, but you’ll thank me for this one too. When you have to use it one day and you remember my words, feel free to look up into the trees and say out loud, “Thanks Dave”.

Carry-on Approved Travel Bag - The Waterbag is within all international limits for carry on luggage. This leather duffle bag fits into all overhead compartments and under the seat in front of you. We take this bag all over the world.

Why the Name “Waterbag”?

I grew up in Oregon, and in our short summers, we’d often go white water rafting down the Deschutes River’s world class rapids. If we weren’t there, we were cliff jumping into or innertubing down one of the many frigid snow melt rivers almost every weekend. One of the things that I always thought was super cool were the dry bags. I thought they were such an innovative idea. If you’re not familiar with a dry bag, you put your camera, wallet and other water sensitive stuff in there, roll the top down and then seal the opening, and the bag keeps everything dry while you’re floating down the river. Even if your raft flips over, everything inside stays dry.

So, once I started designing bags, I had a huge desire to create something with a watertight dry bag type rolling closure. Then I spent quite a bit of time in the Sahara of North Africa where everyone’s bags fold or rolled over to keep the blowing sand and dust out. With the Deschutes and the Sahara as inspirations, I came up with this leather duffle bag and called it the Waterbag, which we trademarked. If water can’t easily get out, then it can’t easily get in either. BTW, I was not covertly working for the CIA or any other US government agency at all when in North Africa under the cover of a businessman traveling with his family.

Still the One

Bought it in 2015, reviewed it here in 2019. My bag is now 11 years old. I think I have six SB pieces, including two numbered limited edition items.

So I obviously enjoy the products, but this one is the best. I just won't leave home without it for any extended period under 3 days. It is gorgeous, just better with time. The leather is soft and supple, it breathes and expands as I need to fit more and contracts when I have too much space. No baggage handler has hurt it, no water gotten inside.

I'm telling you, this is the centerpiece when you leave.

The Greatest Travel Bag I’ve Ever Owned

I purchased the WaterBag in Dark Chocolate Brown, and I can honestly say this is one of the most impressive leather pieces I have ever owned. The color alone is absolutely stunning in person. Deep, rich, rugged, and timeless. It somehow manages to look both adventurous and refined at the same time.

This is not just a duffle bag. It feels like something built for a lifetime of stories, travel, and adventure. The craftsmanship is unbelievable. Every strap, buckle, stitch, and panel feels massively overbuilt in the best possible way. You immediately understand why Saddleback is known for making products that outlast generations.

What surprised me most is how versatile it is. I have used it for weekend trips, road trips, flights, and even daily carry when I need extra space. It turns heads everywhere. I constantly get asked where it came from.

The leather develops more character every time I use it, and the Dark Chocolate Brown color has this incredible vintage richness that only gets better with age. It genuinely feels like the kind of bag that becomes part of your identity over time.

Beyond how beautiful it is, the functionality is exceptional. It holds far more than you would expect while still carrying comfortably and feeling balanced. You can tell this was designed by people who actually travel and understand durability.

This is one of those rare purchases where the quality exceeds the price once you experience it in person. An absolute masterpiece of craftsmanship and easily one of my favorite Saddleback pieces of all time.

High Quality Leather Bag

This is the most beautiful and high-quality leather bag I've ever seen. From the durability and quality of the components to the feel and look of the leather, this product is sophisticated, eye-catching and dignified. The quality makes it much more than just a bag, but a family heirloom that will last forever. Never thought I'd say such a thing about a bag, but there is no other way to describe it.

My favourite bag

This is a fantastic bag. It's everything I hoped it would be, but what one doesn't appreciate until one unboxes it and slides it from the plastic wrap protecting it, is the wonderful smell of leather. This is my third Saddleback bag. All are equally well made, soft and supple but tough as nails.

The others aren't wrong. This thing is great!

This bag came in my saddleback club membership. While I would choose a standard duffle over this design, I'm so glad it was sent in the pack. It feels fantastic, smells amazing, and I have used it for copious amounts of tasks. Entering into a sales office, 2 different women complimented the bag as it was being used to hold paperwork on that trip. Highly recommended by me.

Use It All of the Time!!

This has got to be one of the most versatile Saddleback Leather bags. I use it on quick trips as a carry-on bag, and it never fails to gain the admiration of at least one or two envious fellow travelers. I also use it in tote format on Costco trips where it gets filled to the top. Again, it never fails to earn praise at the register where the bagger is worried about wrecking the bag with heavy items until I tell them, "do your worst, it can take it." It makes the one tripper in me giddy when I haul my entire run all at once. It is perfect for loading all of the supplies for a day at the beach, and everything in between. This bag does it all!

HOLY GRAIL LEVEL UNLOCKED!

The Holy Grail of all SBL bags has been achieved, yall. It is so choice. If you have the means, I highly recommend picking one up. Its a beaut, Clark!

Dave/Suzette - Can you please market rear view mirror tree air fresheners in SBL scent. That'd be great.....?

Unbelievable.

I purchased the water bag with my club membership, which (for the 2024 selection) makes a perfect 3 piece matching set of luggage suitable for a long weekend (or a week in warm climates). This bag is seemingly magic in that it holds far more than it looks like it should. The night it arrived, I packed it with clothing for 5 days, plus two flannel shirts, a light jacket, towel, swim trunks,, a spare pair of shoes, my toiletry bag, and a pair of slippers. Believe it or not, there was so much room to spare I had 3 holes left on the straps!

The Waterbag

I do an extreme amount of research before purchasing items … I researched Saddleback's Waterbag several days, from online reviews, videos, even a leather crafter disassembling some Saddleback products … The only issue anyone had with the bag, is the weight … if you want something featherlight, do not go for high quality leather … a nylon bag that’s good for 12 months might be your bag … but, if you want awesome quality, this bag is definitely awesome … I’m at the “Buy It For Life” era in my life … If I can buy something, knowing I will never have to buy it again, it really peaks my interest … if it fills that requirement and looks great doing it, I’m all in … This bag does it all … I can’t wait to start using it on some adventures (which will start in a couple of weeks) … this bag gets 2 thumbs up … thanks Dave for designing such an awesome Duffle Bag

Excellent quality and functionality

An absolute beast of a bag. It actually comes across as much more heavy duty than I was expecting, but believe me, this is a good thing. Quality is excellent, not even a stray thread anywhere from any stitching! Very versatile bag and I can't wait to get it well worn in. There are other products I was considering, and after seeing the quality in this one, I'll definitely be a return customer!

Really Nice Overnight Bag

I am a big fan of Saddleback Leather and their products, especially Dave's Deals. I have had my eye on the waterbag for awhile and signed up for the Dave's Deal notification. I was so excited when this Deal became available I couldn't get my credit card out of my wallet fast enough. In reality I did because I got the bag. Its a beautiful bag, wonderfully designed and built to last a lifetime. Like all the other Dave's Deals I have purchased you would be hard pressed to find the minor imperfection. Just awesome!

The Most Indestructible Bag Ever

Got this bag to celebrate my post-pandemic travels , and the bag is an absolute eye catcher.

To share some background, I am have been a big fan of SLC for several years and use many of their products on a daily basis.

The waterbag was new addition to my collection. I bought the three strap baby beast a few year ago and was looking for something a little bigger that would serve as a carry on. I purchased the dark coffee brown color, which looks luxurious, yet super solid.

True to SLC quality, the bag is made like a beast. It is larger than the 3-three baby beast, yet not too big. It can double as a day tote because of it's handles, which makes it super versatile for day trips or even casual shopping.

I don't ever expect to need to replace it. It will certainly be something my kids will fight over once I am gone!

Worth the wait

After lusting over this bag for near a decade, finally pulled the trigger. Most definitely worth the wait.

Went with the tobacco color, and it came with some nice scars (barbed wire) nothing to excessive; whomever cut this piece did a perfect job.

The only negative is I wasn't aware they swapped the interior pig skinned liner from a 4-sided box to one with two sides.

Chestnut, Medium - best possible travel companion.

I travel for work, man do i travel light. I work in the film industry, and traveled to Singapore for 35 days with only the Waterbag. held, 1x pair of heavy duty steel toe sneakers, toiletry bag, 8x Tshirts, 6x lightweight Columbia work shirts, 1x pair of Jeans, 4x pairs of shorts, my lightmeters, laptop and chargers for phone etc...

I had room to spare. Even came back with a snorkel, chinese cookie tin, and an additional shirt. Best thing about the waterbag, is that you can compress it to remove air, then strap it down to keep it dense, but small.

I even re-rigged the carry strap, and handle so it hangs more like a ruck sack than traditional duffel, without being quite a back pack.

the only negatives are that it can take a while to get it open if you need to get something on the plane, and that if packed super tight ( like if you squeeze all the air out and its relatively small) you wind up with terribly long bits of strap that can snag on things, and be potentially annoying to the people in the aisle as they get whipped across the face. I tuck them back into the retainer loop, but that almost guarantees it will get caught on the seat arm rest in the plane. need to figure out a solution for myself.

That said... Now I Kind of want another large sized one.....

Jack of All Bags

The Swiss Army aka Macguyver Bag. Had my bag for 1 year. A medium waterbag. With some eagle creek pack it system organizers, I can put 5 days worth of clothes. The best part.of the bag is that it is extremely comfortable as a backpack.

Dave's Deals

I just received the large waterbag (tobacco), and I couldn't be more pleased. I bought it from Dave's Deals (10% discount), and I have no idea why it was discounted. I own several SBL products, and this discounted bag looks no different than anything else that I've purchased. The bag itself looks, smells, and feels great. I will be using it as my primary travel bag for mission trips, etc. Can't wait to try it out.

Another wonderful and attractive bag

Another wonderful and attractive bag by Saddleback. Well built and fun to carry, allows you to really stand out if you like compliments. The only con is the quality leather has some weight to it.

Love and hate this bag!!!

I love this bag because it is beautiful and rugged. Really wish this was something the Army issued instead of the large canvas ones. I hate this bag because it almost got me in trouble with my wife on a trip to Louisiana. A beautiful flight attendant stopped me to compliment me on the bag and my wife thought she was hitting on me ;-).

I have a confession to make.

I've been unfaithful to my wife of 25 yrs. It all started when I met this sexy dark coffee colored brunette. She stands about 18 inches tall by 20 inches wide. From the first moment I laid eyes on her, I fell head over heels. Her drop-dead gorgeous looks, her feel, her scent, her touch, and the sounds she makes are all so intoxicating........... Whew! I think I need a cigarette. ;)

But seriously, I can't stop looking at or touching this bag! I'm sure my wife will understand and forgive my transgressions. Her birthday is approaching and in an attempt to get me out of the doghouse I plan to shower her with gifts that include a Saddleback chestnut tote and wallet. Good plan huh?

Exactly what I wanted

I had been hemming and hawing over ordering this bag for over a year. I finally pulled the trigger and couldn't be happier. I got the tobacco medium water bag. It is a gorgeous bag, top notch construction, and something I know I will have the rest of my life. I can easily pack it for a long weekend or a 2-3 day business trip and it has plenty of room. This is my 5th Saddleback purchase but not my last. Great company, great products, and great customer service.

Item #3 and going!

Got my bag today and couldn't be more thrilled. This is to replace an inferior suede carry on (thanks for the leather education Dave) and it will definitely do the trick. Not only does it make me feel more confident that my bag won't fall apart (like mine did on a rented motorcycle on a California trip) but the square bottom is perfect for a luggage rack. The backpack feature is perfect since I can wear one bag (my front pocket backpack) then strap this over it, or crossbody, depending on how much I have. The add'l d rings will clip an errant helmet and keep me sane until I can put some things in the hotel room. Im envisioniong some awesome trips this upcoming spring! Even more exciting is the pigskin liner that makes carrying fishing rods and a cooler full of catfish a perfectly reasonable task for this bag, tote style. Of all four of my new digs, the versatility of this bag is the one I'm most excited about. Perfect for my family trip packing and my solo rough and rugged and wet trips alike.
