A Full Grain Leather Belt and Why Thats Important

Imagine you caught someone shaving the shingles off of your roof. You'd want to kick them below the belt, right? They would be taking off the toughest and most protective part of the roof, and now your house would have problems. Well, that's what low class leather belt makers do to leather.See, in their search to save money, they buy C and D Grade leather full of scars that nobody can use. Then they shave off the top part of the leather to get rid of scars and blemishes. But in doing so, they shave off the grain, which is the top layer and the toughest and most protective part of the leather, and then your leather belt just falls apart sooner than later. But those guys actually want the belt to break, then you have to buy another. So it creates recurring revenue for them. If there is a little bit of grain still there, then that's called Top Grain leather. We buy the expensive A Grade Leather with the full amount of grain (full grain) leather and make leather belts with it.

Leather Belts made from Old Bulls

We don't just buy the standard 1/8" thin leather; we buy the most expensive leather that is just under 1/4" thick. I can only get it this thick by ordering "Heavy Steer" hides. Most cows are slaughtered between 15 to 18 months old, but these bulls lost their lives at about 24 months old. That extra time doesn't give them much more meat, but it does give them thicker skin. That's important because the hormones now are redirected to muscle and size. This is the thickest leather we can get.

Tanned for Strength and Longevity

Our leather was not cheaply tanned. Vegetable tanning takes a long time to do right. Low quality tanneries only soak it for two to three weeks, but ours was allowed to soak up the tannins for 6 to 8 weeks which makes it stronger and last longer, which in turn makes your leather belt to be stronger and lasts longer too. It's more than style; we create belts to last a lifetime and pass down.

316 Stainless Steel Hardware

Metallurgists think we're lying when we tell them our belt hardware is made of 316 Stainless Steel. The clasps on our bags were tested to hold up to 750 lbs. These buckles are thicker than those and can probably hold up to 1000 lbs. It's like killing a fly with a shotgun, but it's nice to know it will never have a problem and that I could trust my life to this buckle and this leather belt if I really needed to. This buckle will not break.

Design of this Full Grain Leather Belt

All belts on the market only have 5 holes, 1" apart, and that start 4" from the tip, so it looks cleaner to people looking at your groin area. But they shouldn't do that. I designed this belt with 9 holes that are 3/4" apart so it can adjust comfortably. This belt will never be slightly too loose or too tight before or after meals. Along with that, the holes start 2" from the tip just in case you need to use your leather belt to strap down something to the roof rack of your rig.

How to Spot Good Quality Leather Belts

There are all types of belt styles, from everyday wear to special occasions such as weddings. These belts can go with everything. But how do you know if the belt is made of good-quality leather? Here are a few tips:-Look for belts made from full grain leather. This is the highest quality of leather available and will ensure your belt is durable and long-lasting.-Check how long the leather for the belt was vegetable tanned. You probably will not be able to find that information; they are too embarrassed to admit it. Our tanning process is more expensive and time-consuming, but it produces stronger and more durable leather.-Make sure the hardware on the belt is made from high-quality materials such as 316 stainless steel. This will ensure that your belt buckle is solid and long-lasting. The belt buckle should last as long as the leather.-Look for a belt that has been designed for comfort and durability. A good quality belt will have holes 3/4" apart and start 2" from the tip.-Check the reviews of the full grain leather belts to see what other people have said about them. A quick Google search on them will reveal a wealth of information about any given belt. When you keep these tips in mind, you can be sure that you are getting a good quality belt that will last you for many years. Or, in the case of our full grain leather belts, you will pass them down to your kids and grandkids.

The Importance of Thickness in a Leather Belt

A leather belt needs to be at least 5mm thick to be a decent quality belt. Our old bull leather belts are 5.5mm to 6mm, just short of a quarter of an inch thick. The problem is when you go to a store and ask for a leather belt that's at least 3/16" thick they will give you a blank stare. Why? Because the vast majority of leather belts out there are paper thin, less than 3.8 mm. Not full grain leather, and more specifically, not old bull leather.Measure your current belt and see. Unless it is a Saddleback Leather Belt, you will probably find the measurement to be less than 1/8 of an inch thick. To make a living, the belt makers think they have to cut as many belts out of a hide as possible, and that's only possible if they use very thin leather that's been shaved down. Don't try to attach any other gear to it. That thin leather will break and drop your belt holster as soon as you put a sidearm in it.

The Bottom Line

I'm not just trying to sell you a belt. I'm trying to show you the best leather belt that will last for years and years on any occasion. A belt that will become more comfortable with age and a belt that will develop a rich patina over time. I know it's hard to imagine, but many guys who have never owned a good quality leather belt are amazed at the difference. It's more than style. It's like the difference between a Pinto and a Mercedes Benz. Or, if you've never had an expensive steak, the difference between a T-bone from Walmart and one from Omaha Steaks. Don't throw away money and settle on a belt that will stretch, crack, and break. Instead, go for one made with the best materials. When you invest in a full grain leather belt from Saddleback Leather, you're not just getting a belt but peace of mind. A belt that will last your lifetime and only look better with age.

Which Size to Order?

Ordering online is difficult since you can't try on the belt in advance to know for certain which size is perfect for you. Before placing my order, I read a lot of the reviews, studied the size chart, communicated with Saddleback customer service, and even asked AI chatbots for advice.

The consensus was that these belts are made much longer than most, so one should order a much smaller size than normal. I usually wear pants with a 32" to 33" inch waist. I started out trying the 28" belt, then the 30" belt. Both were too small because after buckling, little to no tail was left at all. The 32" Old Bull Leather Belt was a perfect fit and allowed for an 1.5" tail when buckled on the 7th hole, i.e., the fit and look was just right. And, if I eat two cheeseburgers for lunch and have to loosen to hole #6, there's still at least 1" of tail, so it still looks good. Of course, every human is built differently, but if you're taking a stab in the dark like I did, my best advice is: order the belt size of your usual pant waist size. Start with that and you'll probably nail it on the first try without having to incur the headache, time, or expense of multiple exchanges.

It took me a couple of tries, but I finally found the perfect size. And like every other Saddleback item I own, I absolutely love it. This belt evokes sensory euphoria. It looks great, it feels great, it smells great. I draw the line at eating it but I bet if I did I'd even claim it tastes great. And no, it makes no noise, but if it did it would likely be one of the sweetest sounds I've ever heard.

I bought this belt solely for outdoor landscaping work. I guarantee that I'll wear out long before it does. How many products can you say that about?

Old Bull Belt

The best belt I have ever had. Fits perfectly. It does not roll down and I love that the holes are so close together for a perfect fit each time. It gets more worn in each time a I wear it (which is all the time lol). Highly recommended. I also purchase a black version.

This company is way beyond the five star rating I gave it. After fifteen years if use they honored their warranty without a hitch. You got to love them. Thank you Saddleback, We absolutely love you.

Great Design

Aside from their sheer thickness and rugged aesthetic, I love the narrow hole-spacing on these belts. If anyone is planning to get back into shape, it is motivating to be able to tighten your belt up one notch sooner than later.

Best belt ever

So far I've only been wearing it about a week or 2 but it's way better than any other belt I've had. It is a little stiff but it will work itself out as I wear it. I measured my old belt to where I wore it and selected the correct belt for what my current size it. Excellent fit! Last belt I probably have to purchase! Now onto their other items!!!!!

Just WOW!

I purchased the Old Bull belt for my dad in the chestnut. As long as I can remember growing up, he has worn the same belt that had become so worn and tattered. It finally broke (was not an SBL belt) This is not something that he would have ever purchased for himself.
This belt is incredible. Thick, super high quality, and sharp looking. It is a timeless classic! I was blown away when this arrived. I mean, it’s just a belt, right? Well, I have never been so impressed with a belt. This thing is awesome and he will never wear through this one! I have a feeling that this one will be passed down to my sons one day! Thank you, SBL!

I purchased this belt close to 20 years ago and has been worn almost daily. My waist size has changed but has been within the same range. The belt just doesn’t die and still looks great. Thank You

Amazing belt - Finest quality around.

I've been wearing saddleback leather belts as long as they've been making them. Fact is, the only reason I had to order a new one is I lost weight and it wouldn't hold my pants up. Nothing wrong with my broken in belt. New belt is the same quality as one from 10 years (or more) ago. Looking forward to breaking this one in over another decade!

Old bull belt quality

The best belt full grain belt money can buy. I own 5 different kind of full grain belt but, this one is on different level of quality and craftsmanship. Expensive but worth the cost over longevity.

A Belt Built to Last — and a Company That Stands Behind It

I recently picked up the Old Bull Belt and I have to say—this thing is a beast (in the best way possible). The leather is thick, rugged, and know it’ll easily outlast any other belt I’ve owned. It has that rare, solid quality you can literally feel in your hands. I believe this could handle a great deal of abuse I honestly can’t imagine it ever giving out.

I did mess up the sizing when I ordered (completely my fault), but Saddleback’s customer service team was fantastic. They made the exchange for a smaller size incredibly easy and stress-free. It’s clear they stand behind their products and genuinely care about their customers’ satisfaction.

After this experience, I’m completely sold on Saddleback as a brand. I wouldn’t hesitate to buy from them again, and I’ve already recommended the belt to a couple of friends. If you’re looking for gear that’s built to last and backed by real people, this is it.

Best belt

I’ve always owned cheap belts that fall apart within the year. They’re either too tight or too loose.
I finally splurged on a Full Grain leather belt & do not regret it. It’s a perfect fit. There’s no sagging if you have your pockets stuffed. It’s not too tight where you’re sort’ve in pain to breathe.
The buckle is heavy duty, so it’s got a nice hard latch that’s easy to undo. It’s a thick, solid piece of leather that even smells phenomenal even after wearing it a couple of weeks.
I bought a full grain leather wallet from SaddleBack leather couple months back. That’s what essentially got me to order the belt.
With this company, you’re getting quality USA made products. Definitely worth the money if you want to keep your stuff for a while.

Solid Old Bull

I'm only now writing this review but have had my belt for almost 10 years. I''m an industrial mechanic and often hang tools from my belt or work in damp environments that seem to really soften leather. Previously I used to go through 2 belts a year -going on 10 I can confirm this belt is strong stuff. Over the very long term I will say that the leather stretches a bit to contour to the fit (if you hang mine from a hook it's not straight anymore). I used to buckle it at the 2nd hole, then changed to the 1st, eventually I bored my own '0'th hole which is what I use now. (I'm a little thicker at the waist than I was when I bought the belt so it's definitely the leather stretching out).
I see they now have a note on the product saying it sizes a bit large which was true for me. Looks like they have changed the buckle a bit since then but I'm assuming the belt leather is about the same.

Anyway the belt is still strong as ever and I expect to get another 10 or more years out of it, worst case scenario is I drill another hole further in as it stretches. Even if I ever did wear this thing out someday, I'd happily buy another and settle for 2 belts to last a lifetime.

Outstanding Quality

Have 3 of these belts in different colors. These are not bullet proof - more like nuclear bomb proof! On the natural I did leave in in the sun for a couple of days to slightly change the color - added a nice light brown patina - just my preference over the natural color it came with. The team at SBL is outstanding to work with!

I really struggled.

This is an amazingly great belt. The leather is thick and the buckle is overbuilt compared to other buckles. I struggled to choose the color. I wear a black belt normally. I really like the chestnut and dark brown, but I couldn't resist the image of the natural getting darker and developing its own patina over time. I closed my eyes and held my breath while I submitted my order for the natural belt. I have had my belt now for 2 days. What surprised me was how the belt fits using the sizing instructions SBL recommends. My perfect center hole leaves a short end to tuck through the leather belt loop. I'm used to more length coming out past the buckle. But I am glad I chose this size (32). I could go down a hole or 2 or up 1 occasionally. This is the perfect range for me and I am never likely to have it be too long or too short. I know Dave says most people don't change buckles, but for a belt worn with jeans, it is nice to have that option. You cannot change buckles on this belt. It is riveted, but the stainless steel buckle is awesome.
