Design of the Full Grain Leather Briefcase

This full-grain leather briefcase is over-engineered in that it has no breakable parts. No magnets, zippers, buttons, or snaps; this briefcase is reinforced with rivets and hidden polyester strapping wherever there is stress. Leather stretches over time, and we didn't want that to happen. So it's designed with the fewest and biggest pieces of leather that make sense. This briefcase can be converted into backpack mode if you need your hands free. It fits all 17" laptops with a ton of room to spare for everything else you need to carry (within reason, for those thinking they could fit their acoustic guitar in here).

Materials in Our Leather Briefcases

The materials in our leather briefcase are full grain leather, pigskin lining, 316 stainless steel hardware, and German industrial marine-grade polyester thread. Our leather is tough and resilient, and our pigskin lining is super strong. Our hardware is 316 stainless steel and is rated to hold up to 750 lbs. Our thread is UV-resistant and German industrial marine-grade polyester thread. In addition, our hidden reinforcing straps ensure that the bag will never stretch and those straps will never deteriorate. This is over-engineering.

Backpack Feature

The classic leather briefcase converts into a laptop backpack with a shoulder strap with two shoulder pads. Clip one end of the strap onto a d-ring on the bottom, run the strap through the o-ring, and clip it to the opposite side and you've got yourself a backpack. Full Grain Leather is the key to a quality leather briefcase. If you take off the top part of the leather (grain) it's like taking the shingles off of the roof. They get rid of the toughest and most resistant layer of the hide. When tanneries get a leather hide from the slaughterhouse, it's really thick. So, the tannery splits the top half with the grain from the bottom half. Now they have two hides to sell. The tough and beasty hide that still has the full amount of grain (full grain) is expensive, and that's what we buy. The bottom half is great for making low quality budget leather briefcases or laptop bags that will dry out and fall apart in a short time.

Removable Side Straps

You can remove the side straps to use as an emergency size 36 full grain leather belt, tie-down, or tourniquet (hopefully you won't need that). But on the bag, they are great for holding wet umbrellas and blueprint tubes to the top of the flap.

D-Rings on the Bottom and Side

Had my classic briefcase for 14 years. Traveled all over the world with it and countless work trips to the west Texas oilfield. It’s still going strong without a stick out of place. The chestnut leather keeps looking better and better. So glad I bought this bag back in the day.

Perfection!

This was my first Saddleback purchase in 2014- large DCB. I had been obsessing over it since finding the site in 2013 while searching for quality leather bags. The history of SBL sold me and as a Christian I love supporting ministry based companies… another bonus! This bag is so much better after 11 years of use, I would never part with it! Of all my SBL purchases the first one remains close to your heart. Still gorgeous, never any problems and well exceeds expectations!

Really Nice Bag

I have carried a cheap, gym duffle for the last 5-6 years. I have been shopping Saddleback bags for longer than that! There really is no alternative to this style of bag, and I have searched high and low over the years. Even more expensive bags just don't have the same look. I finally pulled the trigger on a Large Classic Leather Briefcase, and I love it. I just received it, so I am still getting used to it. I can't wait to see it warn in like my SB wallet is.

12 years later

I purchased this bag in 2012 as a graduation/new job gift to myself. It has been a daily workhorse for half of those years and is today. It’s been to 20 states and France. It looks just like the day I bought it with a few minor scuffs on the exterior and a few spill stains on the interior. I take care of it, but it’s a tank. My only complaint is that the exterior cup holder pockets are a bit tight with a large laptop in the bag. Honestly, a minor quibble in the grand scheme of things. Cry once at the price and then never again.

Was hesitant on getting it because of the price, but it’s worth everything I paid. The quality of the bag is so much better than what I expected and I was worried about the weight since every review I read says it’s heavy, but it’s actually lighter than I thought it would be, great product would recommend for anyone that’s thinking of getting it.

Excellent bag

I have an extra large chestnut version of this bag and it is amazing useful. The 11+ years I've used it, only 1 small thread issue that Saddleback repaired (really easy process).

It is my daily carry and also used for weekend trips as it holds enough clothes in packing cubes for an entire weekend with still enough room for electronics.

Best decision I made was to stop purchasing the cloth based attache cases and move to leather. I like it enough that I have given it as gifts to the nieces.

Exceeded my expectations

I have been using my briefcase for about a month now. Three of those weeks I have traveled for work. The briefcase holds a lot of stuff but still fits fine under airline seats.

I was a little worried that the bag would be heavy, which it is when it is full. But the backpack feature is a gamechanger. I took an extra wrap on the backpack ring and tied the wrap together with a piece of paracord so it stays put. It works great. Beyond great.

I did remove the side straps, which saved some weight and still looks good (less busy too). I'll save the straps for when I need to go on Safari. They are nice, I just don't need them day-to-day.

The bag design and quality exceeded my expectations. I am very happy with the bag and my purchase. Thank you.

Beauty and Function

After spending considerable time searching for a really good leather bag (and purchasing more than one that barely lasted a year or two), a friend turned me on to Saddleback. After a brief look at the website I saved my pennies and took the plunge. I carry a lot of stuff with me and like a large bag, so I had initially ordered the XL in Carbon Black. When it arrived it became apparent that Dave was not joking, it really is suitable for Yeti. The incredibly friendly and helpful staff at Saddleback very kindly allowed me to ship it back (no mean feat all the way from Australia) and exchange it for the large. I had in the meantime ordered a pouch to clip to the front of my briefcase (which looks fantastic and is the perfect place for my wallet and phone), and when I had the large briefcase sent to me I added a cable bag, large bifold wallet, belt pouch and gadget sleeve. This is still a large, heavy bag but it's quality leaves me with no regrets. I work in fine arts and have had clients who own leather products they have paid thousands for compliment me on my Saddleback briefcase. It handily holds everything I like to carry around with me (which is a lot of junk, I'm a bit of a snail!) with ample room for more, and doubles nicely as a bag for day trips or even overnight stays and weekends away. The Carbon Black colour looks great with my formal work attire as well as more casual weekend clothes. After almost daily use for three months the bag is only just starting to soften and patinate. My briefcase makes me happy every time I look at it and gives me a great feeling every time I sling it over my shoulder. I've just ordered a round satchel for those times when I can't carry my large briefcase around with me (grocery shopping, for example!). I can't recommend Saddleback products highly enough.

Most things that are refined and elegant are very fragile and fall apart with even a harsh word or stern glance. Far too many things that are durable and reliable are built with all the craftsmanship and care you would find at the local chapter of cavemen united for progress.
