Photographer’s Satchel

An excellent life is made up of a thousand excellent details. May our Photographer’s Satchel be one of them in your life. Here are three excellent reasons why this camera bag is great for photographers. It’s functional, it’s photogenic and it brings joy.

Say YES to Function

Answer YES or NO honestly about your current camera bag

  • Can it be worn across the chest for easy access and converted to a backpack for trekking?
  • Is it insulative so batteries and gear don’t quickly freeze or get damaged with heat?
  • Would you use it as your everyday carry when not taking pictures?
  • Does it enhance the way you look as a photographer?
  • Can you leave it unbuckled or unzipped for hours without gear falling out because it has a flap?

Say NO to Eye Pollution

Answer Yes or No about your current camera bag

  • Would someone ever paint it into a painting?
  • Is it photogenic? Would it ever be the subject of the photograph in Venice or out in nature?
  • Is it classy?
  • Is it attractive? Does it attract the eye of others?
  • Does it get better looking the longer you have it? Or does it age like milk.
  • Would your grandchildren fight over it when you’re dead?
  • Would it enhance your photos if it were in the shot? Or be photoshopped out like a piece of trash.
  • Does anyone compliment you on how good looking it is?
  • Does it make you look better?
  • Does it reflect who you are?
  • Does your other camera bag age like fine wine?  or like old milk?
  • Are you excited about it? Or it is boring.
  • Are you proud of it?

Say YES to Joy

Answer Yes or No about your current camera bag

  • Are you emotionally attached to it?
  • Would you miss it if you lost the bag itself?
  • Does it look like it has stories to tell?
  • Do you ever intentionally rough it up to make it look better?
  • Will people take pictures of your camera bag?
  • Would people ask to borrow your camera bag empty?
  • Has it ever brought you joy and enhanced your life?
  • Will this ever be said about it? “This was your grandfather’s or grandmother’s camera bag and now it’s yours.

FAQs and Objections

  • What about protection if I drop it? My other camera bag has a lot of foam in it.

Let the padding on the bottom be a small blanket or light sweatshirt for just in case situations.

  • But it’s not big enough for all of my gear.

It’s not meant to hold ALL of your gear. Do you only have one pair of shoes? Leave the 35 lb. camera bag in the hotel room and carry this for smaller fun outings or on long treks.

  • What about dust and rain getting in? Buckle it down and it’ll be fine.

You’re overthinking it unless you’re using it in the blowing sands of the Sahara. Then just put a t-shirt on top of it and then buckle it down. And don’t carry it through waterfalls.

  • Why did you rename it the Photographer’s Satchel?

15 years ago, it was named The Medium Satchel. 10 years ago, I redesigned it for more comfort and renamed it The Rounded Satchel. Since so many photographers buy it and send in great photos of it, and because it’s what our photographers and videographers personally carry at Saddleback, it became obvious and appropriate that it be renamed The Photographer’s Satchel.

Justification To Spend the Money

  • Even a cheap crap lens costs more than this bag, which is a key part of your gear.
  • It’s cheaper to buy one bag than replace bags for the rest of your life.
  • Don’t mess up other people’s photos with your ugly or boring camera bag.
  • Two bags in one. Most camera bags are dedicated to being used for only cameras, but this is a fashion accessory meant to be used for daily use when not out shooting.
  • Photographers are drawn to beautiful and interesting things to capture so others can enjoy them too. Why would you own a not beautiful or interesting camera bag?
  • We pay more money to have a room with a beautiful view. We spend a lot of time and money to drive or fly to beautiful, faraway nature or look into the Grand Canyon and then return home. We take a lot of time and effort to hide powerlines, cords, trash, and other things that aren’t natural or that just don’t fit. Creatives love good-looking things. That’s why they congregate in beautiful places and paint or photograph beautiful things. Why would a photographer carry an ugly camera bag on their side unless they just couldn’t find a beautiful one? You now have no excuse.

Absolutely love the new satchel. I bought it for the Leica Q2 which fits perfectly. The construction is like all their other bags to notch handmade with the best quality stitching in the business. This bag will last my life time and be handed down to kids or grandkids. Very happy customer that has many of the products. Most important they shared God's word with a little Bible.

Excellent...

This is my favorite satchel. It's the best combination of space/size, features, and price. This is now my daily carry and my all-time item from Saddleback. Excellent bag from an excellent company! ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐

This satchel is wonderful. Finest quality leather, I couldn't stop smelling the new leather.

It has plenty of space for my camera and all the stuff I carry everyday. When I am not using my camera, I use this as my purse. Thanks Saddleback for making a great product.

I LOVE this bag

I waited and debated a LONG time about getting this bag. I am kinda kicking myself for waiting so long and bought other semi cheaper bags. I am using this as my everyday purse, I have tons of room and it has already taken a beating. Some would say it probably too heavy for everyday purse, it does have weight, but that does not bother me. The quality and durability is unmatched to saddleback leather. I am planning for this to my last forever bag I buy

Dad Bag for Vacations

Bought this bag about 5 years ago. It's my go to 'Dad bag' for family vacations. Perfect size for wallet, keys, phone, bottle of water, and what ever my kids think I need to keep track of for them. It's been with me all through Southeast Asia and the Jersey Shore. Like all Saddleback bags, it looks better and better the more you use it.

Photographer's Satchel

Recently I ordered a Tobacco Brown Photographer's Satchel, however when it arrived it was not what I expected. The color was darker than depicted, the finish felt sueded rather than smooth and there were some workmanship defects.
I called Customer Support and spoke to Jan. She took my disappointment seriously and said "We certainly don't want you to have a bag you're not completely satisfied with", then walked me through the exchange process. A few days later I called to verify that SBL received the original satchel and I spoke to Fallon. She verified that it had been received and assured me that the new exchange bag would be checked and double checked before it was sent out.
Several days later it arrived and as promised it was flawless and exactly what I hoped for (only in Coffee Brown which I requested).
5 stars for this very excellent piece of leathercraft.
By the way, nobody is going to fight over it when I'm dead because I'm taking it with me!

Jan and Fallon both also merit 5 stars each. They were efficient, courteous, professional and actually cared that I got a satchel I would be happy with.

Dave Munson, if you read this review, and you should, these two ladies deserve recognition for a job well done.

Over the Moon

Just received my Photographer's Satchel and it's everything I'd hoped. Not too big that you're tempted to stuff everything you own into it - not too small so you're able to accommodate the necessities you bought it for. It's the perfect size for a guy (or gal) wanting a small bag to daily-carry, or function as a light camera bag - that doesn't look like a purse (not that there's anything wrong with that...).

For camera use, my F, F2's (both DE-1 non-metered prism finder and the larger F2AS) and F3's fit fine mounted with a period-50mm lens & hood. And there's still plenty of room for a small gadget bag and some film.

Because I don't like carrying a lot in my pockets I've envied women's ability to pull off a purse. When not loaded with cameras it's a great every day carry bag. It'll hold sunglasses, keys, billfold, phone, a large, Shinola journal, Pn'A's Sendak Mini with fountain pens, a slim-line bible and/or plenty of other daily-use necessities... everything you'd need for a day at the coffee shop or client meeting - without putting a permanent crook in your neck or back.

It stands upright when set down (you'll want to be careful about the surface it's placed on with those cool metal rings on the bottom). The strap is substantial - and plenty long. I'll usually carry it cross-body (not as a backpack), so cinched the strap up nice and short, resulting in a fairly long pig-tail at the end.

You'll want to be careful not to put your phone in the external pockets because the stainless hardware will take its toll banging against it. Fortunately the phone fits perfectly in the inner end-pocket, and if you have wireless CarPlay everything just works properly when you climb in to drive.

This bag is a little hefty and a little stiff when new - but that's OK by me. I went with the dark version and it's absolutely gorgeous. And the smell when you open the packaging is intoxicating... in a good way. Here's to years of use breaking it in. Thanks Saddleback for bringing this guy back. He's my new best buddy.

The Satchel which is rightly called Photographers Satchel

I have the Satchel since a year now and love it. Yes, it is a bit heavy like all the Saddleback (overenginered) products but its worth carrying. When I bought it, it was still just called "Satchel". But i often use it with a padded inlay from Amazon for my Canon R5 or Leica Q3. Both fit well with a single lens. The outer pockets are great for two small insulated bottles (one for water, one for coffee)! Highly recommend as EDC or travel companion! Will try this year in Columbia to use it more as a small backback! Appreciate the "conversion" possiblity and therefore: a highly recommended product.

My Goldilocks satchel

I want to say this bag is awesome. There is enough space for my EDC. And I like functionality and beauty. Tobacco to me is that rugged and beautiful, like Zena Warrior Princess (Y’All can really tell my age lol). I can even attach my travel leather satchel to this bag for extra storage, which is awesome and great in itself (A Plus Dave, your the man). I do want to give my opinion on something though. I have several tobacco colored leathers from SBL. They are all darker than what some of the pictures show on the website. If Y’All can put a disclaimer that the color may vary and be different from what is shown, that would allow potential customers to have room in their expectations. Either way stay BLESSED Y’ALL.

Built Tough

I'm a nurse and I've carried this bag every day to work for well over a year now. It's a perfect size for all my gear. It gets thrown around a lot, and I get into it all day long. It barely looks used yet. I had been looking at this for a while, and finally pulled the trigger. Best decision I've made in a long time! Hardly a day goes by where someone doesn't compliment this bag, as well.

Perfectly quaint everyday bag

Well put together. The coffee stain is very clean, looks great. Nice, simple design.

The Best Personal Item for Travel

I have a 3 year old son and about a year ago we started traveling by plane. My wife and I naturally split up roles, she is responsible for getting my son onboard the plane (the most important role) while I am responsible for getting our bags onboard and having passports and whatever else we need. I quickly realized that I was carrying too many backpacks (diaper bag + my backpack that had our travel essentials). I decided to ditch my personal backpack and I ordered a Rounded Leather Satchel. I completed my first trip with it and it’s amazing! First, I was able to carry the satchel over my shoulder and my son’s backpack which was much easier than carrying two backpacks. Second, it holds everything I need: passports, various chargers, sunglasses, a kindle, AirPods, and an 11 inch iPad with a Logitech case. I can fit more in there. The back pocket was perfect for plane tickets and snacks that we bought at the airport. The side pockets were also useful for holding my phone or AirPods when I took them out of the main compartment. Since the bag is all leather, I was not worried about it getting damaged. Finally, since the bag is smaller than a backpack, I was able to put it under my legs while we were in the air so I actually had legroom.

I highly recommend this bag to any parent that wants the best personal item for traveling.

This bag.

This bag is everything I want it to be! It is a memento of my hard work that will last me a lifetime. This bag literally is the perfect size EDC. I oogled it longlyingly before finally purchasing. If you are on the fence, just get it. This bag, is everything!

ROUNDED LEATHER SATCHEL

Bought this satchel in dark coffee brown for the convenience of crossbody AND backpack carry options. Absolutely LOVE the bag. Love it so much, I bought the duffle bag/waterbag the day after I got the satchel. The quality is exceptional. The leather is thick and the stainless hardware is ideal. You can tell this is a bag intended to be used and abused, not babied it like some designer bags that are intended to look nice but not be beaten up in travel. This bag will look better with use. Buy it...you'll like it.

Rounded Leather Satchel- Tobacco

The Saddleback Rounded Leather Satchel in Tobacco has quickly become one of my favorite bags. It’s reasonably priced and ideal for daily use—perfect for errands or outings when you just need essentials. I already own the large Front Pocket Briefcase in Dark Coffee Brown and the Front Pocket Leather backpack (the full one) in Tobacco, both of which are fantastic for travel or work. But sometimes,...... they’re simply too big for everyday tasks, like running quick errands or taking the dogs out for a walk.

Enter the Rounded Satchel. This satchel is compact yet versatile. It comfortably holds my wallet, phone, charger, a few small toiletries, and earbuds, and still has room for a water bottle, a firearm, or even passports, more toiletries, regular white envelopes, 4 soda cans (maybe more) if needed. It strikes the perfect balance between being minimal and functional. Unlike my wife's travel satchel, which I initially envied, this bag has a bit more room while still keeping things light and easy.

As a nurse practitioner living in St. Petersburg, Florida, this bag’s style and size are spot on for my lifestyle. It’s practical, unisex, and doesn’t force you to leave anything behind. No- I cant stuff it with unfolded files and folders, but that is what the other bags are for. I’ve used the rounded Satchel from casual outings to business casual settings, and it complements everything from a rugged outfit to a smart blazer at a conference.

The bag features a soft pigskin internal pocket, false bottom, a key fob, additional internal pockets, and a roomy rear exterior pocket. It can do backpack mode QUITE well since it’s designed for practicality rather than capacity (I figured that is how you the reader of this review might want to use this bag). If you’re looking for something lightweight, ultra-practical, and a timeless style at a fair price mon frere...... this is it buddy! I’m over-the-moon thrilled with this satchel and am sure you’ll love it too!

For When Your Back Needs Relief.

I purchased this satchel 8 months ago and it has been serving me quite well. I have scoliosis and some days my back doesn't like for me to use my Gen 1 Tank or my Front Pocket Backpack. This satchel fits all of my essentials comfortably, although I must admit I have to downsize my water bottle to make the setup work. I use the satchel in backpack mode and I don't use the strap and shoulder pads it came with. Instead, I managed to pickup an extra set of original, Gen 1 Tank straps Saddleback had in their warehouse (I don't know if they have any more so please don't take my word for it). The light-weight of this satchel paired with OG Tank straps make for an extremely comfortable bag to carry. So much so that I went for a hike the other day for several hours and my back wasn't in any sort of pain at all. Apart from carrying EDC essentials, this makes for a good farmer's market bag. I went to one several months ago and got concerned with the space and how much I was buying. Sure enough, this satchel handled it all and most importantly I was comfortable. Even the lady ringing me up was surprised I fit everything in there. All in all, this is the perfect bag for carrying your every day essentials and I cannot recommend it enough and especially so during the warmer months. Five Stars and would repurchase if something ever happened to it.

Perfect for dance shoes

The small compartment holds ballet slippers perfectly and the main area holds two pairs of tap shoes. So what if the bag cost more than the shoes; it’ll also last much longer!

Fantastic bag

I use my Rounded Leather Satchel and a field bag for hunting. However, it’s a great cross over bag. On a recent trip to Argentina, I carried the satchel in backpack mode on the plane and through the airport. When we arrived, I used the bag in the field with shooting gloves, shooting glasses, hearing protection, snacks, water bottles …. Just anything I thought I would need. It’s so versatile, just get it. Back home it spend time loaded with binoculars, knife, leatherman tool, flashlight … it is one bag you will use all the time.

Wife loves her new gun bag!

There might have been an ulterior motive here, but I bought this for my wife for a nice home for her G48, ear protection, ammo etc.
I own many Saddleback bags and this one does not disappoint. Dave has been consistent with quality over the years and not changing from the superior construction of his products. I admit I love the rattle of the stainless steel and the smell of the leather.
I should probably add that if you buy something nice for your wife, she can only be happy for you when ‘your new bag’ shows up a few days later.
Craftsmanship is hard to come by these days and when you find it, make it your own! Keep up the great work guys!

THE BEST SBL BAG, EVER.

So happy Dave brought this one back. I’ve owned all sizes - the small. The large, and this one. This one is the Goldilocks. I keep coming back to it, and for good reason. It has so much functionality, can be dressed up or down, and can take a beating and still look good. It’s built to last. No matter what new designs SBL puts out, I hope they keep this one on the roster. It’s an original, it’s a classic, and it is definitely one all of my kids will fight for when I’m gone.

Still going strong

I ordered one of these in 2015 when it was the medium round satchel (with small and large still available). While the current iteration has a few different flourishes, it is really the same bag. Mine has kept me company for over 8 years, whether carrying my smaller iPad Pro (in Saddleback sleeve) or my Surface and all my daily goodies. Perhaps the most notable thing: the price is the same as I paid 8 years ago. I know Saddleback has undergone price increases in the past, but they are clearly trying hard in this day and age to continue shipping high quality items without passing along every economic ripple to the customer. I’ve been a customer for 10+ years and while I don’t order constantly, I’m always on the lookout for my next piece, sure that it will last.

Great work bag (if you’re ok with small)

My daily carry bag as an anesthesiologist, used in OR and around hospital. Won’t hold documents unless folded in half, but amazing quality and I mostly carry folded papers, pens, 1-2 water bottles, phone charger, AirPods, personal items like chap stick and medicines, occasionally some small medical equipment. Takes some tinkering to find the most comfortable strap wrap through the ring so “backpack mode” doesn’t dig into your back. Smells amazing, matches my tow belt and 2 saddleback wallets. Still a 100% satisfied saddleback customer, now saving up for the deep pocket duffel also in tobacco brown!

Perfect for everyday

I bought this leather Satchel mostly to use it as an edc. It had proven to be the right choice. I can carry my camera (mirror less) inside a camera insert, my cables (in a pocket), my iPad and my wallet (long wallet) and my cigar’s stuff, and still have space plus the outside back pocket and the water bottle pocket too. I got it in black and it is beautiful. Also, I always use is in the “backpack” mode with the knot that someone demonstrated in a YouTube video. Very happy with it.
